CHEATING ON YOUR GLUTEN-FREE DIET? READ THIS!

As a Certified Gluten-free Practitioner, trained under Dr. Tom O'Bryan, a National Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach and Functional Nutrition Counselor, I work with patients that are referred to me when they are given a medical reason to go gluten-free.

Some medical reasons to maintain a 100% gluten-free lifestyle:

  • Gluten-related Disorders: (Autoimmune) Celiac Disease, Gluten Ataxia, Dermatitis Herpetiformis, (Non-autoimmune/non-allergic - same symptoms as Celiac but no 100% flattening of the small intestinal villi) Gluten Sensitivity, (Allergic) Wheat Allergy

  • Migraines

  • Mood Related Disorders

  • Autoimmune Diseases (Gluten exacerbates EVERY autoimmune disease.)

Common issues with adopting a gluten-free lifestyle:

  • Not fully understanding the sources of HIDDEN GLUTEN.

  • Cross-contamination (most of it in their own home with food prep and storage).

  • Not educated on gluten-free labeling.

  • Unclear how to dine out successfully.

  • Misinformed about gluten-friendly restaurant options.

  • Believe "just a little bit of gluten won't hurt me".

  • Thinks that erasing the symptoms with Ammodium, Peptobismol, or other over-the-counter medications or supplements will solve the problem.

  • Not connecting all of their symptoms to gluten exposure. - brain fog, joint pain, migraines/headaches, rashes, anxiety - not every person suffers from bloating, gi distress (vomiting/diarrhea), cramping

  • Don't want to feel out-of-place or demanding, so compromises own meal to keep others happy.

  • Insecurities with advocating for self on a gluten-free diet.

  • Tendencies to cave to social pressure.

  • Not healing the leaky gut associated with gluten.

Many people needing to go gluten-free are like a deer in headlights, it all seems so simple - Don't eat gluten - until they try to plan a meal, read labels, dine out, etc. The physicians that refer their patients to me understand the importance of adopting not just a gluten-free diet, but a 100% GLUTEN-FREE LIFESTYLE. They want their patient outcomes to be successful and recognize the importance of adopting a gluten-free diet the right way, the healthy way, and to do so without incorporating lifestyle changes and mindset work is a huge disservice to the patient and ultimately ends up in a failed gluten-free diet attempt. (Physicians wanting work with me, please go here: https://www.healthcoachforyou.com/physicians for more information!)

When patients work with me, we look at EVERYTHING in their orbit that could contain or harbor hidden gluten:

  • medications

  • supplements

  • body care/skincare/oral care/lip care/haircare

  • kitchen set-up - utensils/cookware/toasters/mixers

  • food storage - fridge/freezer/pantry/labeling system

  • food prep

  • food serving - buffet style/family style

  • dining out

  • traveling

  • special events - catered, sit down, buffet

Something else we work on is MINDSET. In order to truly HONOR YOUR GLUTEN-FREE BODY, you must have the proper mindset to truly know and accept this fact:

Cheating on your gluten-free lifestyle means cheating on yourself because

  • Any ingestion of gluten causes widespread, systemic inflammation for 6-8 weeks!

  • All of the symptoms you are trying to avoid by "erasing them with OTC meds" are simply muted but the inflammation is still there!

  • Continued ingestion of gluten for those on a medically restricted gluten-free diet can lead to further health complications and additional onset of autoimmune diseases.

  • The guilt you feel over taking in "just a little bit of gluten" causes stress which increases cortisol (stress hormone), which increases inflammation (more stress on the body), which compromises your health.

If you have struggled with adopting a 100% gluten-free lifestyle...

If you have tried a gluten-free diet and failed...

If you have started a gluten-free diet and are gaining weight...

If you are on a gluten-free diet, yet malnourished...

If you are newly diagnosed with a Gluten-related Disorder or Autoimmune Condition and have been advised a gluten-free diet is right for you, yet...

You have no idea how to:

  • start a gluten-free diet

  • eat healthy on a gluten-free diet

  • avoid cross-contamination on a gluten-free diet

  • read gluten-free labels

  • find hidden sources of gluten

  • meal plan and prep gluten-free

  • reverse leaky gut

  • reduce inflammatory load
